Why You Need A Holistic Doctor

I belong to many Facebook forums and LinkedIn groups. I follow different groups related to integrative health care and alternative health care. One question or comment seems to be trending at the moment: Do I need a professional Naturopath? Alternatively, to put it a different way: I don’t need a professional, I can Google what I need.

As a professional, I have the experience to answer both versions. Yes, you need a professional to help you with your health journey. A professional will be able to look at the cause of your symptom. He will help the body where it is deficient, and then the symptom will disappear. When you go into a health food store, or you buy products off the internet, more than likely you are addressing a symptom, which is hindering your quality of life.

EVERY symptom is a healing strategy of the body. The body is saying: Hey, look at me, I need help! When you suppress a symptom, then the body has to find another, usually worse symptom, in hopes that you will pay attention. If you follow the western model of medicine, and continue to suppress symptoms, then the body has no choice but to show the symptoms which the medical profession will label as Cancer (for which there is usually no cure) in order for you to really pay attention.

If you are one of those who Dr. Googles everything, then you most likely have a cabinet full of herbs and supplements which are not doing anything for you. I had a client yesterday who came in and said that he was just dragging. He is very cognizant of his health needs, and has been self-supplementing with a very good MLM line of products. However, these products were not meeting his needs. I switched the brand (which also switched the therapeutic dose) of vitamins, and within eighteen hours, he called to say that he was amazed at the difference the different brand made in his energy level. In fact, this is his quote: “Feeling much better and stronger this morning! Took two as soon as I got home and two at bedtime and a couple more this morning! Feeling Good! Thanks!”

Does that mean that you cannot self-diagnose and self treat? No, you certainly can. What that does mean is that if you engage the help and guidance of a professional, you will reach your health goals quicker, and in the long run, probably less expensively. You will not have dollars tied up in inventory in your kitchen cupboard that is of no use to you, and you will have the right products at a therapeutic dose. You will help your body recover the health and vitality that you are missing.

History of Naturopathic Medicine

As a distinct health care profession, Naturopathic Medicine is almost 100 years old. Its philosophy and therapies have their origins in the philosophy of Hippocrates and the healing wisdom of many cultures. At the turn of the century, practitioners of a variety of medical disciplines combined natural therapeutics in a unique way. These practitioners joined together to form the first Naturopathic medical societies. Naturopathic medical conventions in the 1920’s attracted more than 10,000 practitioners. Early in the 20th century there were more than 20 Naturopathic colleges and Naturopathic physicians were licensed in a majority of the states.

Naturopathic Medicine experienced a decline in the 1940’s and 1950’s with the rise and popularity of pharmaceutical drugs, technological medicine, and the widespread belief that these therapies could eliminate all disease. It has experienced a resurgence in the last three decades, as a health conscious public seeks out alternatives to conventional medicine. As a body of knowledge, Naturopathy continues to grow and evolve. As an organized profession, Naturopathic Medicine is committed to ongoing research and development of its science and incorporates elements of scientific modern medicine.

The concept, "Let your food be your medicine and medicine your food" has been the foundation of naturopathic medicine for hundreds of years. A growing body of scientific knowledge in this area is reflected in numerous professional journals of nutrition and dietary sciences, supporting the naturopathic approach to diet and nutrition. Many medical conditions can be improved as effectively with foods and nutritional supplements as they can by any other means, but with fewer complications and side effects.

The use of plant medicine is core to naturopathic medicine. Botanical medicines have been shown to be effective in addressing a wide variety of ailments. A resurgence of scientific research in Europe and Asia is demonstrating that some plant substances are superior to synthetic drugs in clinical situations.

This natural health system, developed by Samuel Hahnemann in the 1840s, continues to evolve. And while it's mechanism of action can be difficult to understand, this extremely safe form of medicine can provide positive results in many conditions for which conventional medicine has no treatment.

Our Naturopathic doctors are trained in the fundamentals of oriental medicine and acupuncture and commonly utilize this information to address your health from multiple viewpoints.

Children and adults are now being exposed to greater quantities of chemicals in the environment and food supply. These chemicals interact synergistically to increase their negative effects. Naturopathic detoxification and immune restoration protocols provide invaluable support to the body's overtaxed systems.

Through the use of hot and cold compresses we can increase or decrease the flow of blood to any part of the body. Using scientifically applied principles, we can use this tool to help boost the immune system, improve circulation, and detoxify the body of unwanted waste. This is one of the oldest and most effective ways to support overall health and vitality.

Mental attitudes and emotional states can be important, and often overlooked, aspects to healing and disease. Naturopathic doctors are trained in various psychological techniques, including counseling, nutritional balancing, and stress management.

The plan of action will address your health and wellness in a complete way to help reduce your symptoms and increase your quality of life. Naturopathic medicine blends centuries-old natural, non-toxic therapies with current advances in the study of health and human systems, covering all aspects of family health from prenatal to geriatric care.

Naturopathic medicine concentrates on whole-patient wellness; the medicine is tailored to the person and emphasizes prevention and self-care. Naturopathic medicine attempts to find the underlying cause of the person’s condition rather than focusing solely on symptomatic approach. Naturopathic doctors cooperate with all other branches of medical science referring clients to other practitioners for diagnosis or treatment when appropriate.

Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are primary care physicians clinically trained in natural therapeutics, in the states where they are licensed, and whose philosophy is derived in part from a Hippocratic teaching more than 2000 years old: Vis mediatrix naturae - nature is the healer of all diseases. Their practice is based on the same basic bio-medical science foundation that an allopathic practice is; however, their philosophies and approaches differ considerably from their conventional counterparts. Naturopathic doctors are trained to diagnose disease and treat patients by using natural modalities such as physical manipulation, clinical nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy, counseling, acupuncture, and hydrotherapy, among others. They choose treatment based on the individual patient, not based on the generality of symptoms. This approach has proven successful in treating both chronic and acute conditions. Those Naturopathic doctors working in unlicensed states, such as Texas, do not profess to diagnose, treat, or cure any condition and only work to support health.

The six principles that guide the therapeutic methods and modalities of Naturopathic medicine include:

Naturopathic medicine uses therapies that are safe and effective. A gentle approach is the best approach in most cases.

The human body possesses the inherent ability to restore health. The doctor’s role is to facilitate this process with the aid of natural, nontoxic therapies that work in harmony with the body.

ND's seek out the underlying cause of a disease and do not simply suppress symptoms. Only rare circumstances call for a suppressive approach. Symptoms are viewed as expressions of the body’s natural attempt to heal, or the language of the body. Naturopathic doctors are trained to speak this language and restore the body back to a state of health and balance.

Health, along with disease, is a balance of many different factors. Often people will need to be approached on multiple levels to achieve true and lasting health.

For thousands of years doctor's have had the responsibility to educate their patients and encourage them to take an active role in their health. An empowered, knowledgeable patient who takes responsibility of their health can achieve many wonderful things. Unfortunately, in this day and age, many doctors skip over this crucial aspect.

Naturopathic doctors are preventive medicine specialists. ND's are specially trained to assess patient risk factors and have the tools and knowledge needed to reduce risk and prevent illness. Education and a healthy lifestyle are two of the best ways to prevent disease and enjoy life.
