I don’t know if you are looking at the new about the new e-coli bacteria sweeping Europe. I read the newspaper today, and the US standards would NOT have detected this bacteria. We must be very proactive with our food. I am hopeful that you all buy organic vegetables. However, that in itself is not enough to secure bug free food. Below is an easy recipe to make your own pre-wash.
1. Make a soaking solution with equal parts of water and white vinegar. Soak any fruits or vegetables for 5 to 10 minutes. Rinse well. This is an excellent homemade vegetable wash.
2. A vegetable wash spray is a little more convenient. Make a homemade vegetable wash spray by mixing 1 tablespoon lemon juice and 2 tablespoons baking soda with equal parts of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Shake the bottle to mix well.
3. To clean the vegetables put them into a colander in the sink and spray liberally with the homemade vegetable wash spray. Let sit for a few minutes.
4 Scrub the fruits and vegetables with a brush and rinse thoroughly.
5. Avoid pesticides altogether by buying organic produce whenever possible. They are not sprayed with pesticides.

This was great to know. Will go get some white vinegar right away. Was using dishwashing liquid to wash vegetables.
Great, Judy.
I read in this morning’s paper that this strain of E-coli is now in the US. People who had been traveling in Germany have now returned home with the bacteria. We all know how contagious e-coli is. I am glad you are protecting yourself!
