Salmon GMO-AquaBounty

Well, my newspaper showered me with information last week. One of the items of news was that the salmon that I love to eat and recommend as a healthy food choice may be on the endangered list.

In an article entitled ‘Salmon Stakes,’ I learned that the salmon is going to be genetically modified with an ‘anti-freeze gene’ from a fish called an ocean pout. At least the genetic modification is from another fish in the same category as the salmon, but really, do we really need to mess with Mother Nature?

The thought behind this modification is that the salmon will get much bigger much quicker, which will mean that the fishing industry, and AquaBounty in particular will make more money.

I am all for making money, honestly and decently. However, I am not happy with my food choices being further limited by taking another natural, normal product and modifying it in a way that makes the host sterile. I am not apposed to the Mendel variety of selective breeding, so that the biggest and the strongest of the species leads to bigger and stronger progeny. What I am opposed to is a natural food source becoming unnatural at the behest of big money.

What is equally disturbing is that the FDA poised to allow this fish to be marketed with no labels for us, to let us know that what we are eating is not as natural as we once thought.

Any procedure that causes a living organism to become sterile is not good for that organism, nor is it good for our food supply. We now know that the genetic modification of drought resistant corn and the growth hormone fed cows are a danger to our food supply. We are seeing young girls (as young as six-years-old) starting their menses. Is this what we want to see?

What do you think? October is ‘say no to GMO’ month. We can work together in the Unites States to accomplish the same food safety measures that have been enacted in Europe. No genetically modified foods are available for sale in Europe.

Let me know what you think…..
