SARS— again

WHO  (The World Health Organization) had advised that a patient in Qatar has been confirmed as having a SARS related virus.  WHO is advising, as a precaution that all patients with unexplained pneumonia be tested for the new coronavirus.

Four other cases in Saudi Arabia were reported, also in October.  “Investigations are ongoing to look at all sorts of exposure, including the possibility of human-to-human transmission,” said spokeswoman Fadela Chaib.  So far, there is no evidence for human-to-human transmission.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) affected approximately 8,500 people worldwide in 2003, and approximately 900 died. (The Houston Chronicle, 11/25/12)
