Normally, health professionals will tell you that coffee is a bad thing, and it should be consumed sparingly. However, Sheridan Genrich, a nutritionist gives us some insight with new research. It seems through multiple research projects, that the magic number of cups is between 2 and 4, consumed before noon.
- Coffee can reduce the odds of cognitive decline,
- Coffee can reduce oxidative damage to brain cells,
- Coffee can improve in insulin sensitivity,
- Coffee can lower incidence of Parkinson’s disease,
- Coffee can reduce stroke risk,
- Coffee can lower the risk of death from all causes.
I thought this sounded too good to be true, but the research is there. However, there are some conditions and times that should be considered:
- Drink filtered coffee to remove diterpenes. Diterpenes cause elevation in cholesterol levels.
- Avoid added sugars.
- Drink coffee black, or nearly so. Cow’s milk reduces polyphenol absorption by nearly 30%.
- Fresh is best!
These people should avoid over consumption of coffee:
- People who are subject to panic and anxiety attacks
- People who cannot control their blood pressure,
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women,
- People who suffer from epilepsy.
Until next time,
Dr. Polly
