I read an interesting article today concerning the interactions of statin drugs with the naturally occurring GLP-1 hormone that our pancreas makes. I was shocked to learn that the use of statins increases the risk of type 2 Diabetes because it interrupts this hormone.
GLP-1 is a hormone that our bodies make that helps decrease blood sugar levels and enable the insulin to do its job. Statin drugs reduce certain bacteria in the gut which help the body produce GLP-1. Statins mess up the microbiome of the gut. For us to be healthy, we must have a diverse colony of bacteria, both good and bad, and in the right ratios.
While this information came out in a 2024 study, the findings have not yet made it into most doctors’ offices. Because most doctors do not yet know of this interaction, we the patients are left in the dark as well.
Why is this important? We are being asked to take cholesterol lowering drugs to prevent heart disease, and that same drug disrupts our guts and causes obesity, high blood sugar and insulin resistance—the very things that lead to heart disease.
The American medical industry must do better at keeping up with new research. We, the patients need to be able to trust our medical professionals are on the cutting edge of science so that if we are presented with a health protocol, we are assured that we are not further complicating our system.
